At S&J Bath, every project begins with understanding the client’s vision — and this recent full roof renewal was no exception. From the moment the client stepped into our Walcot Street showroom, it was clear they were looking for a solution that combined quality, authenticity, and long-term performance.

From Showroom Inspiration to Project Reality
After visiting our showroom on Walcot Street, the client was impressed by the range of materials and the level of craftsmanship on display. This initial visit played a key role in shaping the direction of the project, giving them the confidence to move forward with a complete roof renewal.

Returning to Traditional Materials
The existing roof was finished with heavy concrete tiles, which were not in keeping with the original character of the property. After careful consideration, the client chose to replace these with traditional natural slate tiles — a material far more sympathetic to the age and style of the home, and most likely what would have been used when the property was first built.

This change not only enhanced the visual appeal of the property but also significantly reduced the overall roof weight while improving durability.

Bespoke Joinery, Crafted In-House
To further elevate the finish, the client requested specialist joinery for the roofline details. Our skilled team designed and manufactured marine plywood barge boards, all crafted in-house to ensure complete control over quality and finish.

These bespoke elements added a refined, high-end look while also providing excellent resistance to the elements.

Built to Modern Standards
While maintaining a traditional appearance was important, performance and compliance were equally essential. As part of the renewal, we upgraded the roof’s insulation to meet current building regulations — improving the home’s energy efficiency and ensuring it performs to modern standards.

A Roof That Balances Past and Present
The completed project is a perfect example of how thoughtful material choices and skilled craftsmanship can transform a property. By returning to natural slate, incorporating bespoke joinery, and upgrading insulation, we delivered a roof that respects the home’s heritage while providing long-lasting performance.
