One of the most common questions we are asked by our clients is, can they live in their house whilst we replace their roof? The short answer to this question is yes, but there are some caveats to this and we’ll be going over these in this blog. We’ll also be looking at what to expect when the works commence.

Why Do I Need to Replace My Roof?

It’s something we all wish to avoid, but when it comes to owning a home the time will eventually come when your roof needs to be replaced.

There are a number of different reasons for this. One of the most common reasons is storm damage, particularly from heavy storms where rain and wind have caused substantial damage to several parts of the roof.

Most roofs in the UK have a life expectancy of 20-25 years depending on the materials it is made from. The lifespan of your roof will also depend on the weather conditions it is exposed to. So if your roof hasn’t been replaced in a long time, age and weather can take their toll and leave your roof less effective in protecting the rest of your home. But when it comes to replacing your roof, it doesn’t need to be a nightmare scenario.

What to Expect When Replacing Your Roof

When your roof is being replaced, it is likely to be pretty loud so if you work from home, you might want to invest in some noise-cancelling headphones or find another place to stay whilst the works are underway.

There may be periods when a roofing company needs to access the indoors to inspect the attic space and roof from the inside of your home.

The length of time it takes to replace a roof will depend on the size of your roof and the material of your roof but most roofs take a few days. As skilled roofing contractors, at S&J Roofing Bath, we will complete your roofing works as safely and efficiently as possible.

Can I Stay in My House While My Roof is Being Replaced?

While it can be an inconvenience, you can still live at home while your roof is being replaced and our expert roofing contractors always take extra special care to ensure that you and your family are not inconvenienced during this time.

Living in the UK means the weather can often be unreliable. Although we always aim to undergo roof replacements in fair weather conditions, this isn’t always possible so we have measures in place to ensure your home is protected and will cover up any open areas with tarps if the weather turns.

Keeping You Safe While Your Roof is Being Replaced

At S&J Roofing, our experienced roofing professionals understand the importance of safety and always have your well-being as their number one priority. One thing you can do to help ensure the safety of yourself and your family is to make sure your children are aware of what’s happening and to put some additional rules in place for the replacement period.

As the roofing contractors will need to remove your old roof, falling debris are common so it won’t be safe for anyone to be around the outside of the house at this time. We recommend designating some safe spaces for your children to play in your home or garden depending on the space you have available. It is also a good idea to keep any dogs on a lead when outside whilst the works are underway. There are a lot of new and different things happening in your home so your pets may not adjust well to these noises and new people that are in the area.

Preparing For Your Roof Replacement

The last thing you want is to have any debris fall on your outdoor furniture or plant pots so before the roofing works commence, you’ll want to move any outdoor furniture or items of value out of the way. Anything that can’t be moved should be properly covered and protected.
