Have you ever looked up at a rooftop and wondered what it’s like to work up there? Roofing is one of those jobs that’s easy to take for granted—until you need it! At S&J Bath, we believe in being open about what we do and how we do it. So here’s a glimpse into a typical day in the life of one of our roofers here in beautiful Bath.
6:30 AM – Rise and Shine
The day starts early. Our team is usually up before the sun, grabbing a strong coffee and getting their gear ready. Roofers need to stay ahead of the weather, and early starts help us make the most of dry daylight hours—especially important here in the South West, where rain can appear out of nowhere!
7:30 AM – Team Briefing at the Yard
We meet at our yard or depot to load up the vans with materials, tools, and safety gear. We double-check the job sheets, review health and safety for the day, and make sure we’ve got everything we need. Communication is key—every job is different, whether we’re working on a Georgian townhouse in central Bath or a newer build in the surrounding villages.
8:30 AM – On Site and Up the Ladder
Once we arrive on-site, we do a full safety check, set up any scaffolding, and get to work. Whether it’s replacing tiles, repairing flashing, or fitting a brand-new roof, every job starts with care and preparation. Bath’s roofs are often older and more delicate, so we pay close attention to preserving the character of the buildings.
We take pride in keeping the site tidy and causing as little disruption as possible. Our customers are often at home while we work, so a friendly hello and a quick explanation go a long way.
12:30 PM – Lunch with a View
Lunchtime might be on a scaffold, in the van, or occasionally at a local café if we’re lucky! Bath has no shortage of great views, so eating lunch with a backdrop of honey-coloured stone rooftops isn’t a bad way to break up the day.
1:00 PM – Back to It
The afternoon often involves fitting tiles, inspecting underlay, or sealing any areas prone to leaks. Some days are straightforward, others throw up surprises—especially on older roofs where past repairs might not have been done properly. We’re trained to deal with anything from timber rot to chimney flashing that’s seen better days.
3:30 PM – Wrapping Up
As the day winds down, we make sure everything is safe and watertight, especially if the job isn’t finished in one go. Tools are packed away, scaffolding is secured, and we take photos for our records (and sometimes for our blog or Instagram!).
We also touch base with the homeowner to update them on the progress and answer any questions. Good communication is just as important as good craftsmanship.
5:00 PM – Home Time
After dropping off any leftover materials and clearing out the van, it’s time to head home, clean up, and rest up for the next day. Roofing is tough, physical work—but it’s rewarding, especially knowing we’re helping protect people’s homes from the elements.
